When Should a Child Start Coming to the Dentist?

Posted .

The importance of good dental habits start at an early age and hopefully mold a life-time of healthy teeth and gums. We often hear expecting mothers wondering when should their child start coming to the dentist? Well the general rule is six months after the eruption of the first tooth. Remember decay can occur as soon as teeth appear. The typical age you should start to bring you child is around age 1.

We begin to see children as young as 6 months to a year — perhaps even just to watch YOU, the parent, have their teeth cleaned. They are welcome to sit on your lap to hear the sights and sounds of a dental office. Short, successful visits are meant to build the child’s trust in the dentist and the office. Because I guarantee if you’ve ever had a traumatic experience at the dental office in the past, you remember it. Luckily technology has come a long way and the majority of all visits are pain free, but we want the entire visit to be an enjoyable one! To keep everyone at east, we encourage you to join your children, so both can hear the oral hygiene instruction and nutritional counseling at appointments of your child.

Children, like adults, should see the dentist every six months. You are welcome to be on a shorter recall – maybe every 3 months – if you feel your child needs extra attention to feel more comfortable.
